Although numerology has been with us for thousands of years, nobody really knows where it came from.
The earliest history of numbers goes back to the Egyptians, the Babylonians and other ancient civilisations, who believed that numbers held a secret power. Over time, numerology came to be used in divination.
The Greek philosopher Pythagoras is credited with introducing the modern symbolism of numbers. Pythagoras also believed that numbers could reveal what was, what is and what will be.
The symbolism of numbers is based on the energy of vibrations, joined together in the time and space of a life.
In every incarnation we have a specific number that represents us, and we go through our whole life carrying that number’s vibration. The number chosen in each incarnation is meant to help us define our personality and our choice of career, interests and love.
It is similar in astrology: the arrangement of the stars and planets at the moment of our birth tells us what kind of life awaits us.
Number symbolism draws on many systems of tradition, belief and conviction about mystical and esoteric relationships between numbers and people. Number symbolism and divinatory numerology were popular among the first mathematicians, such as Pythagoras, mentioned above. Numerology is not considered part of science; it is closer to pseudo-mathematics. Alchemy developed alongside chemistry in a similar way, and astronomy alongside astrology.
Today number symbolism is often linked with the occult, divination and astrology.
Modern number symbolism often includes aspects of various ancient cultures and teachers, such as Pythagoras, the philosophers of Babylon and Alexandria and early Christian mysticism, through Gnostic occultism, the Kabbalah, the Indian Vedas and the Chinese wheel of life to the Egyptian rituals of death.
In 325 AD the Roman Church took a stance on numerology and condemned it, classing it among the methods of divination and the occult.

The number you arrive at is your destiny number. Some people, however, have double-digit numbers known as captains of destiny – for example, when the digits of a date add up to 11, 22 or 33.

This is what is known as a captain of destiny or master of destiny. The same applies to 22 and 33.
Astrology and the symbolism of numbers
Astrologers link the numbers 1 to 9 with the nine planets of our Solar System.
0 – According to astrologers, the planet Pluto corresponds to the number 0, which gives it many transformative and regenerative properties.
1 – One is ruled by the Sun. In this case the number is very self-centred, and its people are often loners.
2 – Two is ruled by the Moon. This number is full of feelings and emotions; it is the number of community.
3 – Three is ruled by Jupiter. These are educated, intelligent and happy people.
4 – Four is ruled by Mars and linked to the astrological aspect of the square. People with this number are responsible and decisive and know how to take control of their lives.
5 – Five is governed by the planet Mercury. These people are very communicative and witty.
6 – Six is ruled by the planet Venus. A harmonious number that speaks of art, beauty and love.
7 – Seven is ruled by the planet Neptune. This is a very spiritual number: the number of mystics, visionaries and those who see things differently.
8 – Eight is ruled by the planet Saturn. It is a solid and stable number, but it carries many limitations and tends to follow set patterns. A person with this number learns through experience.
9 – Nine is looked after by the planet Uranus. This person is very eccentric and has an unusual character. They are inventive and consider many different possibilities and paths.
