Astrology is a traditional system of symbolic interpretation of the positions of the Sun, Moon and planets. It is not an empirical science and does not replace medical, psychological, legal or financial advice — but for many people it works as a language of self-reflection that helps them name their needs, strengths and tensions. In this guide we explain what a birth chart is made of, the main types of astrology, how to read a chart step by step and how the calculations at HOROSCOP.SPACE are made.

What is astrology
Astrology combines watching the sky with interpretation. Its roots go back to ancient Mesopotamia, where omens in the sky were recorded and linked to the fate of kingdoms. In the Hellenistic world horoscopic astrology emerged — with twelve signs, houses and the Ascendant — and in the 2nd century CE Claudius Ptolemy systematised it in his work “Tetrabiblos”.
Modern Western astrology draws on this tradition, but usually treats the birth chart as a map of psychological tendencies rather than an oracle. That is how we approach it at HOROSCOP.SPACE: the calculations are astronomical, the interpretation is symbolic.
What a birth chart is made of
A birth chart (natal chart) is a record of the positions of the celestial bodies at the moment of birth, as seen from a specific place on Earth. Each layer answers a different question.
Planets — “what is at work”
The Sun, Moon and planets symbolise functions: the Sun identity, the Moon emotions and needs, Mercury thinking and communication, Venus bonds and values, Mars action, Jupiter growth and Saturn boundaries and responsibility. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto describe generational processes and deep transformation.
Zodiac signs — “in what way”
The sign a planet stands in describes its style. Venus in Aries loves differently from Venus in Pisces. The signs are grouped into four elements and three qualities.
Astrological houses — “in which area of life”
The twelve houses divide the sky into areas of life: from personality and money, through home, creativity and work, to relationships, transformation and vocation. The houses depend on the time and place of birth.
Aspects — “how the parts work together”
Aspects are the angles between planets: conjunction, sextile, square, trine and opposition. They show which functions support each other and which create creative tension.
The Ascendant and the axes of the chart
The Ascendant, or rising sign, describes how you meet the world and the first impression you make. Together with the Midheaven (Medium Coeli) it marks the axes on which the whole chart rests.
Types of astrology
The same calculation technique serves different questions. On this site we use several perspectives.
Natal astrology
It interprets the chart of the moment of birth: temperament, needs, talents and recurring patterns.
Predictive astrology
It compares the birth chart with the later movement of the planets. The key techniques are transits and the solar return — a chart for the year from one birthday to the next. Daily, weekly and yearly horoscopes are a simplified form of this perspective, based on the Sun sign alone.
Relationship astrology (synastry)
It compares two birth charts and shows where a couple naturally supports each other and where they need conversation and compromise. It is a fuller version of popular sign compatibility.
Other traditions: Vedic and Chinese astrology
Vedic astrology (Jyotish) uses the sidereal zodiac, shifted relative to the tropical one. The Chinese BaZi tradition describes a person through four pillars — the year, month, day and hour of birth — and the balance of the five elements.
How to read a birth chart step by step
Start with the big three: your Sun sign, Moon sign and Ascendant. Then check which houses the personal planets — Mercury, Venus and Mars — fall in, because they show your everyday ways of thinking, loving and acting. Finally, look at the tightest aspects: they colour the whole chart most strongly.
The most important rule: no single placement describes a person. Interpretation comes from combining the layers, and its aim is better self-understanding, not attaching labels.
How the calculations at HOROSCOP.SPACE are made
We calculate the positions of the Sun, Moon and planets on the fly for the given date, time and place — we do not use ready-made tables. In our tests we compare the results with the JPL Horizons ephemerides (NASA): agreement is within 1 arcminute for the planets and within 0.1 arcminute for the Moon. Altitude and azimuth are calculated topocentrically, that is, for the chosen location.
Precise calculation is the astronomical layer. Interpretation is a separate, symbolic step — and we do not present technical precision as proof of astrology's scientific validity.
Using astrology responsibly
It is best to treat an interpretation as a hypothesis or a question for reflection. If a description helps you name a situation, use it. If it doesn't fit, there is no need to force it. Decisions about health, law, money or safety should rest on proper sources and expert knowledge.
Astrology and astronomy
Astronomy describes the physical properties and motion of celestial bodies using scientific methods. Astrology uses data about planetary positions but gives them symbolic meanings, which science does not confirm as a mechanism influencing personality or events. Telling the two fields apart matters for using horoscopes honestly.
Frequently asked questions
Is astrology a science?
No. Modern science does not confirm it as a method of predicting events or describing personality. Astrology works as a symbolic and cultural system that can be used as a tool for reflection.
What do I need to make a birth chart?
Your date, exact time and place of birth. Without the time, some elements — especially the Ascendant and the houses — remain uncertain.
How is a daily horoscope different from a birth chart?
A daily horoscope is based only on the Sun sign, so it is the same for everyone of that sign. A birth chart is calculated for a specific date, time and place of birth, which makes it individual.
What is the big three in astrology?
Your Sun sign, Moon sign and Ascendant — the three points where chart interpretation usually begins.
What is a transit?
A transit is the current position of a planet relative to the points of your birth chart. Predictive astrology reads from transits the themes that may matter in a given period.
Are Western and Chinese astrology the same?
No. Western astrology is based on planetary positions in the signs of the tropical zodiac, while Chinese BaZi is based on the lunisolar calendar cycle, four pillars and five elements.

How to use this guide: Astrology is used here as a language of symbolic reflection, not as a diagnosis or a guarantee about the future. Planetary positions are calculated astronomically; the interpretation is symbolic.
