By taking up earthly life again, a soul that has not reached perfection in its bodily life can continue to purify and perfect itself. According to many researchers, scientists, sages, mystics and philosophers, as well as some world religions, the soul passes through more than one bodily life. The purpose of the soul’s journey is atonement, but also experience.
Once the soul has experienced everything it desires and has been purified, it no longer needs further bodily lives.
The doctrine of reincarnation rests on revelation – on incarnating into new bodies and new lives in which we can experience and learn. All souls strive for perfection, and God gives even fallen spirits the chance to attain perfection through their experiences in life.
The doctrine of reincarnation, which grants each person a succession of lives, is the only one consistent with our ideas of God’s justice and goodness. It is the only one that can explain our future and satisfy our hopes, because it gives us the means to redeem our sins through new trials in life. A person aware of their own imperfection draws hope from the doctrine of reincarnation.
Not all our incarnations take place in our world, here on Earth; they take place in various worlds. Incarnation on our Earth is one of the most material and the furthest from perfection. A soul may incarnate on Earth many times until it has advanced far enough to move on to a higher world.
If we want to come closer to the perfection that is God, we must work on ourselves in our own world. Living here on Earth, we need to get to know ourselves, our limitations and our possibilities. Through experience we keep moving forward with our lives, and the soul develops. Sadly, more and more people today live only in the world of matter and money. No one pays attention any longer to the spiritual element of the human being, to human emotions, to the needs of the soul and the heart. Living for matter alone, we do not come closer to God and to perfection – we move further away. And at some point that distance causes the soul to suffer, because it is not satisfied with what it has achieved in that life.
When spirits pass into another body or another world, they retain the intelligence of their previous incarnations, although they do not remember who they were. The spirit must become matter by incarnating into it.
According to some, as a spirit purifies itself, progresses and gains more experience, it takes on a garment increasingly suited to its spiritual nature. At higher levels, in other worlds, matter is less dense. Different worlds are open to different spirits. If we have earned something, we move on; if not, we incarnate again as earthly beings, as humans.
After death, a person does not immediately become a pure spirit. They could not, because what a human being regards as perfect is far from true perfection. There are qualities unknown to us that we cannot grasp here on Earth. A spirit may be perfect by the standards of our earthly world, but that is not yet true perfection.
A spirit must progress in every direction – in knowledge and in morality. If it has advanced in only one respect, it must advance in the other too, in order to climb to the summit of perfection.
What happens to people who die young, and to children who have experienced little in this life? It is a very difficult question, and those who lose a child or a young person ask it of themselves a million times.
From the spiritualist point of view, a child who dies begins a new life in another body. If we assume that a person lives only once on Earth, and that this one life determines their whole existence for eternity, it would be hard to explain why the half of humanity that dies young should enjoy eternal bliss, sparing itself the hardships – often so bitter – and the temptations to which the other half of humanity succumbs.
How can such an order of things be reconciled with God’s justice? The principle of reincarnation brings equality for all. According to it, the future belongs equally to everyone. Whoever reaches the goal last has only themselves to thank. Everyone is equally responsible for their actions.
In our world, childhood is considered a state of innocence. Yet we see children who, despite a sound upbringing, have character traits that lead them to deceit, hypocrisy, perversity and an urge to steal or even kill.
Earthly law does not punish their misdeeds, ruling that they acted without reason. And it is right, because in fact they acted more from impulse than from reason. But where do such varied tendencies come from in children of the same age, brought up in the same conditions and exposed to the same influences?
Where does this perversity come from, if not from spiritual inferiority, since upbringing has not yet had a chance to exert its influence?
Such children are still at a low spiritual level and must bear the consequences not of their actions as children, but of the sins of their previous lives. The law is the same for everyone.
Each of us has dreamt of some distant past, and surely we have wondered whether it might really be possible to find its traces. There have already been many discussions about reincarnation. According to its supporters, our wisdom, fears, personal problems and dreams are connected with the experiences of our previous incarnation. Hypnosis is one of the tools used to look into the past, while dreams are regarded as the stage on which we find confirmation of our earlier existence. Reincarnation – the idea that the soul, spirit or consciousness can be reborn in a new body – is nothing new. The idea goes back to the very roots of Hinduism. Belief in a life before life was also part of the early Christian worldview. In the Bible, Christ spoke of the possibility of reincarnation, but these passages were removed as a result of the Second Council of Constantinople. From a political point of view, belief in a second chance at life could have made society harder to control. Arguments for and against reincarnation abound. The most popular arguments for its existence come from hypnosis and other techniques for retrieving information about a previous incarnation from memory. When hypnosis is used to retrieve memories of a past life, an important problem arises: information clutter. All of us collect unnecessary information throughout our lives without even remembering it. No one can claim to remember everything from the day they were born. Could these forgotten memories surface as answers to questions about a past incarnation? It is possible – which is why hypnosis sometimes brings out only our daydreams, or replays a film we have watched or a book we have read. Information stored in the subconscious is used especially in situations such as a hypnotic trance. Under the hypnotist’s suggestion, our mind can create fascinating stories of a life before life. That is why memories of the past are no proof that reincarnation exists. There are, however, cases that support the reincarnation hypothesis as seen through hypnosis. Children up to the age of five were studied: not yet “contaminated” by schooling and an overload of information, they seemed to scientists to be the ideal subjects for experiments. Thousands of children spontaneously remembered a life before life. During the experiments, researchers came across children who could speak the languages and dialects of peoples who lived in the past. Looking back into the past is, in a sense, the opposite of predicting the future. Since we have no clear concept of the nature of time, we cannot say what this phenomenon consists of. It is quite possible that memories of a life before life are precisely the intuitive use of this psychic gift. When information from the past reaches our mind, its interpretation may take the form of a memory of a previous incarnation. In dreams, people experience the existence of other individuals, who from time to time reveal information from the past. Dreams, in turn, are the tool through which everything becomes possible.
