You can forecast the weather for the next 12–14 hours with your own eyes. These signs are the observations of old highlanders, farmers, foresters, fishermen and sailors.
Clouds most often tell us that the weather is about to change for the worse. The only exceptions are feathery cirrus clouds, which foretell fine, lasting weather, and fleecy “mackerel” clouds – but only in the evening, as in the morning they bode no good.
Heaped cumulus clouds, if they appear during the day, herald sunny days ahead. If they show up at sunrise, however, the weather will worsen over the next few days.
When cumulus clouds grow upwards, expect a thunderstorm or a sudden downpour.
If, in spring, summer or autumn, single small clouds appear during the day and vanish towards evening, you can expect fine, dry weather.
Dark grey clouds beneath a light grey sky foretell long-lasting rain.
When, on a fine day, clouds begin to thicken and build up towards evening, expect the weather to turn and rain to come.
In autumn, if the morning fog is very thick, you can expect fine days for a long time. If fog moves about during the day and sinks, it will get warmer; if it rises, rain is on the way.
If the morning sky is grey in spring, summer or early autumn, a fine day lies ahead.
If there are pink feathery clouds in the evening sky, the fine weather will hold for a long time.
Worsening weather is heralded by a red dawn with low clouds, vivid, contrasting colours in the morning or evening sky, and a dark, purplish-red sky.
Hoarfrost in winter usually foretells fine weather.
A rainbow is a good sign in the afternoon and evening, but not in the morning or before noon, when it heralds rain.
If water evaporates quickly after rain, a new wave of showers will soon arrive.
Any ring around the Sun or Moon heralds a change for the worse within a day or two.
When the wind strengthens in the evening, it will bring worse weather.
Rheumatic pains and neuralgia foretell storms in summer and heavy snow or rain in winter.
If the stars twinkle strongly, it will rain.
