Some people believe it is a good way to achieve immortality. But you have to ask yourself: can freezing the body after death really guarantee us eternal life?
Imagine undergoing such a body-freezing procedure as a volunteer, as in the film where two men are frozen for research purposes and, on waking, discover how much the world has changed.
Imagine that you are the one waking from hibernation 300 years from now. After a moment of bewilderment
you notice an entirely new world. You are dressed in a strange suit resembling today’s astronaut outfits. Someone says to you: “Welcome to the 24th century – did you sleep well? :)” It sounds like a science-fiction film, yet today many people take such scenarios very seriously. Many researchers are working to make a dream shared by many scientists come true: that a person could be brought back to the world of the living several hundred years after death.
You simply die, you are frozen, and then in the future, once medicine has advanced far enough to bring you back to life, it does so – and you thrive in a new world and a new life. It is a wonderful idea if you look at it from the point of view of progress in technology and medicine: you wake up in an ideal world, free of disease and problems, where you can be immortal.
Cryobiology really began in the 1950s, when bull semen was frozen for the first time for the purpose of breeding cattle. At the time, the idea of hibernation was astonishing. Human imagination and progress did the rest, and the subject became one of the most important not only in scientific circles but also in the minds of people who long to live for ever. The American Robert Ettinger, a physics teacher, wrote the book “The Prospect of Immortality”, in which he described the possibility of freezing the human body. Three years later an enthusiastic fan of the book died of lung cancer, but before his death he asked to be frozen. From that moment cryonics companies began to appear. You find such a company and sign a suitable contract with it: in the event of an unfortunate accident or sudden, unexpected death, the company undertakes to take proper care
of your body – to place you in hibernation and, as soon as it becomes possible to bring you back to life, to do so without delay. The client is to carry information on which company should be contacted in the event of death.
