Kabbalah originates in Judaism; it is a spiritual, mystical and philosophical school. At its sources lie the Torah, the Zohar, Etz Chaim, the Talmud, Sefer Yetzirah, the Bahir and many other books.
Kabbalah has had a great influence on many well-known philosophers and scientists, and numerous Jewish associations and movements are based on it. It is generally accepted that Kabbalah is a mystical and philosophical teaching. Kabbalah says that the material and spiritual worlds were created by the Creator in order to fulfil humankind. In Kabbalah this is called the “Purpose of Creation”.
Through Kabbalah we learn how the world was created, what laws govern it, who human beings are and how they should live. It shows us how to strive for perfection so as to be closer to God and, ultimately, for the soul to unite with Him (the so-called Final Correction).
Kabbalah is a practical teaching. Those who study it should come to know it not intellectually or theoretically but in practice, through their intuition. Kabbalah conveys the hidden message of the Torah, which strives for union with God. From the Kabbalistic point of view, the cause of all the problems of humanity and of every individual is a lack of harmony with the laws of the universe: we do not know how to attune ourselves to it.
The doctrine of Kabbalah rests mainly on the revelations experienced by prophets in the past. In this way – precisely through meditation and revelation – the great mysteries of creation can be uncovered. Kabbalah can also reveal future destinies, because time does not exist in this state of consciousness.
Kabbalistic practices
A number of strands of Kabbalah attributed hidden meanings to every letter or word of the sacred text. Kabbalists learnt how to interpret the prophecies obtained in this way.
It is hard to study Kabbalah on your own; you usually need a teacher who has learnt its secrets. Studying Kabbalah leads to a deeper understanding of the laws of life and the world, which enables a person to understand life here on Earth.
