The other rival was the centaur Pholus, son of Silenus and a nymph. It is said that after Pholus died, Zeus placed him in the sky to honour the great art of divination the centaur possessed.
The Greeks also believed that Sagittarius symbolised one of the labours of Heracles – the capture of the Erymanthian Boar.
The Hebrews, on the other hand, saw in Sagittarius Gog, the enemy of the people of Israel, from whose left hand Yahweh once struck the bow and from whose right hand he struck the arrows. Sagittarius also symbolised Azazel – the scapegoat laden with the sins of the whole people and driven out into the desert.
In early Christianity, Sagittarius was regarded as an image of Satan, loosing his arrows straight at people to kill them. It was also a symbol of one of the twelve apostles – Matthew.
The ancient Greeks dedicated December, the month of Sagittarius, to Poseidon. They asked the god of the seas and oceans to grant them a month of winter calm, sparing them from storms and hurricanes at sea. On 6 December they celebrated the Lesser or Greater Dionysia, the festival of Dionysus, the god of wine.
In Rome, the three-day Saturnalia began on 17 December, commemorating the golden age when everyone was free.
